A small conversation between my father (the conservative) and I:

“Son, I know you’re in college now, but you when you come home you still need to clean your room.”

“Okay, Dad, but I’m just not seeing the merit in organizing everything when I’m gonna have to pack it all back up in two months.”

“Well what if you have someone over?”

“Please, Dad…let’s be realistic here.”

“Well, okay, I just want your room clean while it’s in my house.”

“How does the presence of my room affect anyone but me?”

“It just does while it’s in my house.”

“Dad.  It’s like I’m just a loving gay couple who want their commitment to each other to be validated just like your’s was. That’s not much to ask, is it?  All they want is their kids and their cat and their little kitchenette with a toaster.  And you’re just over there, being pissy about it for no reason.  This is why I am not on your team.”

“What? No, that’s comple-“

“THIS IS WHY WE CAN’T HAVE NICE THINGS!”

“…Just clean your room, son.”

Neil Young-“A Man Needs a Maid”

My girlfriend’s-dad-in-law gave a DVD of this performance on, like, the 3rd time we met, so now every time I put Harvest on the turntable I’m a little disappointed in the glossy orchestrated version of this song.

Disclaimer: you should definitely still listen to Harvest.

Goodnight, sweet prince.
I know what you’re thinking…Why are you paying homage to your fish that died 6 months ago?  Well, it’s certainly not because I put him in a box with intention to give him a proper burial and then forgot about him until now when I’m moving out of my room.

Van Morrison-“Sweet Thing”

I had a three day weekend courtesy of my college’s “Reading Day” (i.e. Get Blackout Drunk on Tequlia That You Bought for Cinco de Mayo Day), so Girlfriend and I took advantage and went to see Five Year Engagement.  I don’t why people are talkin’ shit about it, it’s honestly hilarious and one of the cutest rom-coms I’ve had to sit though this year.

But then again, any film with a Van Morrison soundtrack has got my vote before the film hits the projector. (I know this not a relevant idiom, just roll with me here.)

Turin Brakes-“Rain City”

“I’ll unpack my stuff later…”

Never in my life will you be able to offer me a television show that competes with the level of affection I hold for The O.C.  Just…don’t even try.

A Tribe Called Quest-“Ham ‘n’ Eggs”

For once in my life, I’m allowed to write a paper about something I’m genuinely interested in: food representation in hip hop.  Yet here we are, at one in the morning with phasers still set to procrastinate.  This whole “I’m going to major in English” is beginning to become very disconcerting.

I spent all of my adolescence yearning to leave Houston, but I can’t tell you how proud I am to come from a city where you can watch a librarian refer to Z-Ro as one of the “greatest rappers in Houston and the world.”

My Houston Astros are 50 years old today, and are looking younger than ever with this team full of names I’ve yet to learn.  I watched them win the pennant in ‘05 and watched them lose over a 100 games last year, but I’ll be an Astro no matter what ‘til I die, y’all.
